SAICA Statement on the Passing of Mr. Markus Jooste

Johannesburg, 22 March 2024 - The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) notes reports of the passing of Mr Markus Jooste, former CEO of Steinhoff.

SAICA had previously suspended Mr Jooste’s membership pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing. With regards to this hearing, it had been indicated that SAICA was awaiting the outcome of parallel processes by law enforcement agencies and regulators. We note the Financial Sector Conduct Authority recently concluded its investigation.

The passing of Mr Jooste will result in the termination of his membership with SAICA and SAICA will recommend to the independent Professional Conduct Committee that the disciplinary process in this matter be closed, as is standard practice where a Respondent member passes on during the course of an on-going disciplinary matter.

Our thoughts are with Mr Jooste's family and those adversely affected by his conduct during this difficult time.
