SAICA offers its condolences to slain chartered accountant’s family

The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) notes with shock and dismay the shooting of one of its members, Professor Mohamed Saber Tayob.

As reported widely, Professor Tayob, Director of the School of Accountancy and an associate lecturer at the University of Limpopo, was shot over the weekend while he was out running.

Professor Tayob joined the university in October 2009 as a senior lecturer of accounting and auditing, earning a promotion to associate professor in July 2017. He was also the acting programme coordinator for the university’s postgraduate diploma, a position he was appointed to in the beginning of 2020.

Deeply involved in SAICA structures, Professor Tayob was instrumental in the University of Limpopo gaining SAICA accreditation to offer the Bachelor of Accounting Science and Postgraduate Degree, in Accounting in 2011 and 2017 respectively. This accreditation provides access to the chartered accountancy route to previously disadvantaged individuals. In this regard, he contributed greatly to the development of prospective chartered accountants [CAs(SA)] in Limpopo.

He was a valued CA(SA) ambassador, and made a positive difference in the inner workings of the university, and at SAICA, where he served as an active member on SAICA’s Limpopo Executive Committee, as well as the profession at large.

SAICA offers its condolences to Professor Tayob’s family, friends and colleagues and trusts that the South African Police Service will spare no effort in bringing the perpetrator(s) to justice, given the unacceptable criminality of the incident.
