SAICA FASSET Development camps’ attendees excel in National Senior Certificate exams

As the country continues to celebrate the Matric class of 2023 for attaining a pass rate of 82.9%, amongst the country’s top achievers were matric learners who attended the SAICA FASSET Development camps in 2023.

The SAICA FASSET Development camps are a collaborative effort between the Provincial Departments of Basic Education, SAICA and the Finance and Accounting Sector Education and Training (FASSET). These camps were established to harness learners’ academic potential and to achieve the results needed to pursue careers in professions of high-demand while also addressing critical skills shortages in South Africa.

In 2023 alone, more than 4000 learners across South Africa’s nine provinces attended the SAICA FASSET Development camps which were held during winter holidays in July and in October to prepare learners for their final examinations. Selection for the camp was based on learners who achieved a minimum of 60% in Mathematics.

Amongst the learners who attended the SAICA FASSET Development Camps in 2023 and were invited by the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga for the announcement of the results on Thursday, 18 January 2024 at the Mosaïek Church, in Randburg, were:

  • Olwethu Khumalo from Mandla Mthethwa School of Excellence (Umkhanyakude District) in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Simlindele Khumalo from Ondini High School (Zululand District) in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Ziphozenkosi Mntambo from Khombindlela High School (King Cetshwayo District) from KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Bhekumuzi Mnisi from KwaMhlanga Senior Secondary School (Nkangala District) in Mpumalanga.

In addition to this, the overall top matric learner and the top accounting learner in each province were awarded a gift card to the value of R10 000 by SAICA as well as the Thuthuka bursary to those learners wanting to study towards becoming a Chartered Accountant.

As the main sponsor of the camps, FASSET CEO, Ayanda Mafuleka CA(SA) further awarded bursaries to three learners who wish to study any finance-related qualifications in 2024 at a public institution of their choice. “It is FASSET’s endeavour to partner with various credible organisations such as SAICA to improve the pass rate for the learners in challenging streams. Our goal is to roll out to all provinces, depending on funds availability because this is a much-needed intervention.”

SAICA’s Executive for Transformational Project, Gugu Makhanya, congratulated all learners for passing their matric. “Firstly, I would like to congratulate the class of 2023 for demonstrating a high level of commitment during their examinations. Many learners from our camps achieved outstanding results, some were recognised by their Provincial Departments of Education, and some by their districts, we congratulate them all and wish them all the best in their next journey as they navigate higher education. I would also like to encourage those who didn’t make it to never give up and try again.”

“Since the establishment of these camps in 2002, we have seen remarkable improvements in terms of how the camps have grown and the impact they have made on society at large. In the year ahead, we plan to strengthen our partnership with DBE, FASSET and other aligned stakeholders which will assist in extending our footprint and impact,” added Makhanya.
